We celebrate Grandparents Day each September on the 1st Sunday after Labor Day, usually the 2nd Sunday of the month. Marian McQuade of West Virginia passed away in 2008, having 15 children, 43 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. In 1970 she started promoting the idea of a grandparents day and finally on September 10, 1979, President Jimmy Carter issued a proclamation that read in part: “Grandparents are our continuing tie to the near-past, to the events and beliefs and experiences that so strongly affect our lives and the world around us. Our senior generation also provides our society a link to our national heritage and traditions. Grandparents can often reach out past pride and fear of failure and close the space between generations.”
